I was putting on my foundation today and I remembered a tip from CosmoGirl (was Cosmo for teens, doesn’t exist anymore) magazine circa 2003ish: just don’t put foundation on your forehead, to avoid a “mask like look”. Do the whole rest of your face, and not the forehead. And the foundation they had as an example was full coverage.

What are your examples of wacky makeup tips (including real retro ones!)

I also remember the forehead thing! I believed it for yearsss, admittedly I don’t use a ton product of my forehead but I still but something to even out everything.

Another notable one for me is the 3 shape for contour/bronzing. Just looked incredibly unnatural on me, and even with a ton of blending ended up like streaks.

When I first learned to do makeup I was taught the only correct way to do blush was on the apples of your cheeks. Turns out that was awful for my faceshape, I wondered why I looked so round and puffy when I did it that way, until I experimented and found the cheekbone placement to be more flattering for me (which growing up I was told was outdated and looked “very 80s” wellll it looks good on me so idc!)

And last but most memorable for me bc my older sisters loved it, was the slept-in makeup. So gross thinking about leaving makeup on overnight like that, sure it gave you smudged liner but why not just learn to do that omg
