I inherited 3 Elgin pocket watches and took them to a local watchmaker to get a quote on servicing them. None of the three have been in use since at least the '70s. The guy quoted me >$900 each to service them. He said there was nothing wrong with them, they just needed to be taken apart, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled.

He didn’t say anything about special parts, or having to use oil from the glands of a mythical beast or anything. Just a service… for $900 and change…

Is this remotely close to normal? Is the guy banking on people spending big when it’s a family watch? What do ya think r/watches?

I got an old Waltham cleaned, calibrated, and even got a new mainspring made for it all for $350 by my local watchmaker.

    $900 feels very steep.
