With Mode’s Black Friday deals tomorrow, I think it is a decent chance to potentially pick up a keyboard from them. However, upon doing some research and digging, it seems like people here are saying a lot of the reviews on YouTube are heavily sponsored and marketed.
I am mainly looking for a good typing experience as opposed to having the best sound, as I type quite a lot daily. For those with experience with Mode keyboards, would you suggest me getting one, as opposed to a QWERTY (or similar) keyboard? I am also considering the QK100 (I know its a completely different layout and pretty hyped too).
TLDR: Am I “missing out” on anything if I get the QK100 instead of a Mode Envoy in terms of the typing experience. (I understand they are different layouts)
I really enjoy my Mode Envoy. The build process is extremely quick, and it’s a pretty simple design. In every config I’ve built it in, it sounds lovely. You can get deep or clackier sounds out of it very easily. I’ve tried at least 4 different sets of switches in it, and all have sounded phenomenal. I was able to find mine on eBay for around $150, so maybe go the second hand route if possible. Also their cases are only $100 so if you wanted a different color in the future, it’s very easy to do so as they are almost always in stock, and you just gotta plop the PCB in place. Whereas QK or Zoom cases will be a bit harder to find unless you search on aftermarket forums.
Thank you for your advice. What plate do you suggest for clacky sounds?
I will look on eBay to see if there are any good deals. But if tomorrow’s discount ends up really enticing, then I might just get a new one.
Aluminum is my favorite. Their Obscura switches are incredible!
Ok, I might get aluminum too. Are the switches pre-lubed? I am more of a tactile guy, but maybe I might try the Obscura switches, or their house tactile switches. What stabilizers did you use?
Durocks. Not the best, but I had them on hand and don’t really have any issues with out they sound so I just kept them on.
