A good reason to buy an expensive watch:
- you really like the watch and looking at it or playing with it makes you very happy
Bad reasons to buy an expensive watch:
- show off your richess (not only is it dickish, it also actually doesn’t make you happy)
- investing (there are far better ways to invest money)
- impressing others (the vast majority of people won’t even notice that you’re wearing a watch, and even if they did, they couldn’t tell the difference between a JLC with a meteorite dial and a $50 Diesel watch).

Hate?? These people must have some weird tribal/psychological issues. “Wannabe” my behind; they have one of the longest histories in watchmaking of all brands. Maybe it’s like with Seiko, that people are mad about the fact that they paid half their mortgage for a nice watch, and then it turns out that there are also phenomenal watches that are affordable.

It’s interesting that so far, every time I’ve seen anyone ask this question, the answer is clearly “yes”.

What I find an even more interesting (and harder) question is: what watch on someone’s wrist who doesn’t have the money to spend more than $1000 on watches would signal that they are really into watches.
