Hi

Please could you give me some help and advice?

I am 37 and have had the same make up routine for years. I put Rimmel foundation under my eyes and across my nose. I put Rimmel mascara on my eyelashes. I then put a tiny bit of powder blusher on my cheeks and a bit of eyeshadow on.

I basically don’t know how to do anything else. Other people seem to use primer, foundation, base coats, contouring, lip liner, eyeliner, etc… I don’t know where to start?

I recently started a new professional job and I can see my colleagues are more well groomed and polished than me.

If someone could recommend that I try just a couple more techniques that could make me look good (perhaps for work?) that would be amazing.

For context I have very light skin so anything too heavy makes me look like I’ve really overapplied it.

Thanks so much!

Here is my routine: Primer, Eyeshadow, Eyeliner, Mascara, Concealer (where needed), Gel/liquid blush (if using)(it looks more natural if used under foundation and applied with a sponge), Foundation, Light dusting of powder, Powder blush (if I didn’t use gel/liquid blush), Lipliner, Lipstick or lip gloss, Setting spray.

Watch Youtube videos for tips and tricks. Take your time and practice. Make up wipes are great for removing mistakes.

Primer helps your foundation and eye shadow go on smoother and stay better. Start by using a light color eyeshadow over your upper eye pay more attention to the eyebrow area. Use a darker color for the outer edge of your eye. I would invest in some decent brushes. There are 3 I use. A foundation brush, big eyeshadow brush, and a smaller shadow brush.

    Hi :)
I would say your routine as is might be working well base coats i’ve never heard of with makeup so i’m unsure, contour honestly i find isn’t really necessary unless i’m going all out with my makeup but that’s just me
I would definitely recommend a primer! think of it as a base layer (although i don’t know if that’s what was meant by base layer in your post) between foundation and your skin youre making sure it’s all hydrated it gives your foundation and makeup something to stick to and and certain ones help blur out your pores
I’m not sure your complete skin type but i’ve heard the NYX marshmellow smoothing primer is good for more mature skin (although you may also have very young looking skin just thought that would be better to recommend) I’ve also heard the Elf Putty Primer is good for that
my own personal favourite is the elf power grip with niacinimide - it is very sticky giving my makeup something to stick to and it gives me a dewy look

So I’m not huge on makeup either, and I’m also 37. My routine is: skincare (serum, moisturizer, etc), eye primer, eye shadow (I use neutral browns or reds), mascara, powder blush, highlight, lip balm. When I’m going out or want to add more, I’ll put on concealer and a BB cream and do my eyebrows.

If you get an eyeshadow palette with at least 3 colors that are in the same family, you can add dimension with your eyes, and it is quick! The best way to learn would be to watch tutorials on YouTube or play at home when you have some spare time. My general plan is: 1. Light color gets placed all over lid up to brown bone, 2. Darker color gets placed in crease and outer corner of the eye, 3. Pretty color (glitter, color, something shiny, etc) gets placed on the inner corner of the eye and spread to the center of the lid above the iris, 4. Blend with the light color for a seamless look.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you want to see a picture or anything like that. Again, I’m nowhere near a pro, but I’m also a 37 year old woman who isn’t very good at makeup, so I just do my best and keep it light 😁

    Good luck 💜

You should make sure you are using the right colors for your undertone and putting the makeup in the right spots, there are many videos online to figure out ur undertone. And make sure you’re placing your blusher in the right area of ur face according to your face shape.

Follow someone your age on social media because they will have tips for people with your skin type. I love “your self care mom” on tik tok. She emphasizes how to do make up so it lasts without needing a ton of base layers

Looking put together is usually more about having groomed hair, white straight teeth, well fitting appropriate clothes and clear skin than wearing a bunch of makeup. Do you have all of that
