I started a year ago wearing make up full time, a bit older than you (38)…my 2 loves are tarte shape tape concealer (i’m currently using the ultra creamy but use the original first) and Morphy setting spray. Repurchased more than once. I like eye shadow pallets because they give me more options but always tend to go for nudes. I’ve had urban decay and two-faced and both were ok. Recently started using fenty beauty loose powder and elf wow brow and I really like each. Using a puffer instead of a brush to put on my powder has also been a big benefit for me. Have fun!

    1. Blend, blend, blend!
    2. Always periodically check in natural light if you’re planning on going out!
    3. Setting spray will keep your artwork in place for longer!
    4. Doing your eyes before the rest of your face will make cleaning up ‘mistakes’ a breeze!

Delving into TikTok tutorials, but it seems I’m a bit heavy-handed on the blending – maybe not nailing those techniques just yet. Any tips for mastering the art of not blending everything away?

A light touch with a good brush designed for blending. Typically a little bigger and fluffier than your application brushes. If you take off too much you can always reapply.

ooooh I love clean and powerful makeup, and I do fun looks whenever I feel like dressing up. I have ADHD too and one thing I love about makeup is that I go into total hyper focus when doing it, which means creating elaborate looks (once I figured out how to do them) is pretty easy.

I recommend watching videos by qualified MUAs if you want to figure out the actual best techniques (and see looks on women of a variety of ages, facial features, and skin tones). I’m from the UK and watch ig reels by Liv Hudson for inspiration because that’s the style I wear every day, but Robert Welsh, Hindash, Lisa Eldridge, and Wayne Goss are amazing MUAs that are widely loved in makeup communities. Painted by Spencer is also amazing. don’t get intimidated by insanely beautiful looks - just a couple of years ago I didn’t wear anything apart from eyeliner, blush, and lipstick and now I can create gorgeous looks in less than an hour.

I recommend starting with the absolute basics and slowly working your way up - pencil eyeliner, concealer, powder blush, pressed powder, mascara, tinted brow gel, and a simple wash of neutral eyeshadow along with lipstick will go a long way. figure out a simple daily look and what products work best for your skin type. once you have the basics down well then start adding in other things you might want like bronzer, contour, highlighter, liquid eyeliner, falsies, foundation, lipliner.

if you’re really into fun looks I suggest getting a water activated liner palette and a drugstore eyeshadow palette. I like the Revolution forever flawless palettes, they can be hit or miss (but as far as drugstore goes they’re pretty good) but they have a variety of colours and shimmers. I use mine a lot, it used to be my daily palette. water activated liner will enable you to do a variety of fun designs on your lids, and even for a beginner it’ll be relatively easy to get the hang of even if there is a bit of a learning curve.

Wonderful, thank you for the recommendations and tips. I feel like I create a muddy mess with my lack of skills but I’m still having fun.

Here’s my tip: everything is fixable. It washes off. You will have another chance tomorrow.

It’s easy to become hyper focused and spend waaay too long on it and feel stressed. It’s just makeup! Don’t spend 2 hours on it unless you want to and you’re having fun.

Make sure you have good light when applying makeup. I inadvertently saw myself in my car side mirror. Yikes! I bought a lighted makeup mirror that day.

I got into makeup when I was 38. 41 right now and my advise is, first buy drugstore makeup and see what you like and what you don’t. You won’t know until you try it. I bought NYX colourful palette and I’m glad I didn’t buy expensive ones. I like very light colour. Same goes with blushes. Realized I hate peachy and orange blushes. Play around and see how you feel about it.

I have ADHD and think I’m slowly turning makeup into a hyperfixation. I started with very simple makeup- primer, foundation, neutral eyeshadow, pink blush, highlighter and a pinky nude lipstick. I’m left handed and severely short sighted. I needed something I couldn’t fuck up. I just added setting spray and wonder where it has been all my life.

Lip products are definitely becoming my hyperfixation. I have a tiny budget but LOVE Revlon’s lip balms/stains. I make myself use a regular lip balm as well.
