I recently had my hair and makeup done by a professional HMUA for a trial for my wedding. I don’t put on a lot of makeup myself and it’s been many years since I’ve had my makeup done professionally. I had a few concerns about hygeine but I didn’t want to say anything as I’m not sure if I was overreacting or not. Can you please tell me what you think of the hygeine practices below?

  1. Eyeshadow (powder) - dipping the brush directly into the powder?

  2. Liquid liner/cream blushes - dipping brush directly into pot?

  3. Eye-liner pencil- she sharpened and then drew on my eyes directly (and water line)

  4. mascara - she had this small tube (like sample size but big enough for more than one application say. (It also looked branded, not like a refillable one), she used the applicator directly that was screwed on top of the tube on my eyes.

Is this normal practice or am I overreacting?

It is ‘fine’ if you highlight to your client that you are sanitizing your hands so they can see for themselves. But best practice is to use your tools - it is what makes you stand out as a professional and all steps you take to ensure safety for your client will have a positive impact.
