plenty of reasons. they’re cut differently than other models, ankle support, don’t want to risk shoes coming off, etc. it’s not strictly about looks. and maybe some people like the look of high tops with pants that cover them a little

To back him up, my favorite pair of vans are purple suede half cabs. I’m a shorter dude and down have my pants hemmed, I like to wear them covering the ankle of the shoe but behind the tongue.
