How strict should we be regarding the expiration dates of make-up?

Despite having what I consider to be a capsule makeup collection, I see that it’s damn near impossible to use something up because I only wear SPF and do my brows on a daily basis. However, I do need to have some eyeshadows, a couple of cheek products and some lipsticks on hand for when I need them.

I don’t want to put expired makeup on my skin but I have owned some of the things for a while. Should I strictly follow the months indicated on the packaging? Is it ok? Thoughts? What is your personal practice regarding this?

Dry products I keep indefinitely. Cream or liquids I keep for about 3 years because at that point I think it’s obvious to me that I don’t like it that much or it’s not very useful (I’m also impatient). So far nothing has ever gone bad on me (changed in any way)
