  • Stuff is worth how much people will pay for it, especially based on exclusivity or aesthetics. The VALUE of the object may not be equivalent with what people pay for it, but that’s just how economy works, supply and demand. Same as how people will pay $600+ for a GMK Darling set, but it’s not “worth” $600 because it originally retailed at idk $200, but it increased in price because there was 0 new supply but demand continues to increase. The new ABS darling set just sold out in 3 days at $105, which should show you how high the demand is for that kind of set. My preference is to get something that is high-quality AND has nice aesthetics, but I will personally sacrifice aesthetics for function based on budget.

  • I don’t think he understood that, which is why he’s asking. It’s a fair question if you consider he’s new to the hobby, because he may be assuming that these are large companies manufacturing the item, when in large part, artisan keycaps are manufactured by an individual or a small group of people more as “art” than for functionality.

For OP, cost of artisans is often increased because of its uniqueness and for the work that the crafter puts in. Many of them also involve handicraft like painting. They also often only drop once and aren’t constantly in “stock,” so in a sense you’re also paying for exclusivity. Sure, it’s cheaper to buy a knockoff for anything, but then you’ve bought a knockoff and you’re not supporting the original artist/creator.
