I have so severe social anxiety. I don’t think i could deal with getting colors matched irl. I don’t really have anything right now and don’t have a clue how to buy foundation and contour stuff or anything. I’d prefer to buy online (aliexpress would be ideal considering shipping is usually quite high elsewhere). What can i do

Figure out your skin tone (deep/dark/medium/light/fair) and your undertone (warm/neutral/cool).

For complexion products, order a few shades that you think might match you. Swatch them on your face at home and take a picture, which you can then post on a variety of makeup subs for opinions on which shade matches you best. Once you have your match, send back the products that don’t work.

For eyeshadow/blush/contour etc., google which colors will flatter your skin tone and undertone and order whatever strikes your fancy (this category is a bit more flexible). Same with lip products, but make sure the lip color matches your undertone or they’ll look more noticeably weird.

Pretty much just do a ton of research before buying stuff, buy it and send back whatever doesn’t work.

Going to a makeup store when it’s 1h before closing, preferably in an area where there’s usually not a lot of people.

I would maybe see about trying the ulta app that allows you to try on products from home. It could give a general idea of a shade. then you could order or buy some cheap drugstore starters in that shade range (usually foundation has an N1, etc type of ranging to it) to see if they work before you buy a product!

Watch lots of YouTube videos to get ideas of products available. Do you have a friend or family member that would be willing to return used makeup? There are stores that allow that. In fact that’s the only way I buy make now. I need to see how it looks on me once I get home.

You can post couple of wrist and neck to cheek photos in makeup addiction or here to get help with tone and undertone. if you already used something you can also state it in same post and get recommendations.

dont buy makeup from aliexpress though, most stores have free shipping if you get to order threshold which can be 30 or 50 bucks

    1. define skin type. dry or oily, sensitive
    2. define skin problems - acne prone, redness, dark circles
    3. make couple photos of cheek to neck to chest and your wrists and post them for undertone and tone help on reddit, also state your type and issues you have to get better recs
    4. google the recommendations, select the online store in your area or walk into store with knowing what to buy, there you can also try few shades by yourself from testers

You can get blister packs of foundation and concealer online, I also wasn’t able to swatch in person or at the store cuz I mostly buy drugstore and they don’t have testers. But I was able to find my concealer match through trial and error

Haus labs will send a set of 3 foundation shades to try at home and if you buy it they credit the $12 to the purchase. They are nice little glass bottles that are 2-4 applications each.

The kosas try at home kit is not talked about enough. For 45 dollars they’ll send you a whole set a makeup in your shade family so you can pick your best shade. You can then put that same 45 dollars toward anything on their site. They have a great shade range so even if their formula isn’t your favorite you can then go on findation.com to find color dupes for other formulas.

I’ve been searching on Poshmark for samples, lots of people sell bundles of samples.

Just bought some of lipstick and had some really great success finding colours that suit me.

For foundation, you couple probably narrow down your undertone from samples and how light/dark you are

Then you could pick up a couple minis to try

I would love to recommend some great products for you. I believe anyone who loves makeup would be happy to do so. I absolutely agree with identifying your undertone. Also, what type of coverage do you need or like? This def narrows it down to specific products. Also, what type of makeup looks are you interested in? Like an everyday natural look? Or avante garde or somewhere in the middle??? What’s your hair color? All these things play a factor!!! I live in LA , and would love to help . Dm me! I love “dress up” 😜😍💅also, to add mostly everyone accepts makeup returns . I’ve returned to target, Ulta, Sephora and CVS . No questions asked . Don’t like it? Return it. That’s how you find your holy grail products. I have damn near tried every single foundation I can get my hands on.
