I have a pretty wide face shape and smaller eyes so if im not actively trying i tend to look masculine/a little androgynous. Its honestly a big self esteem thing for me. Do any of you have tips to appear more feminine looking? I’ve done the underline the waterline for bigger eyes and framing haircut to make my face shape smaller but hasnt helped the most. Thanks

i think brows can have a pretty big effect on how masculine/feminine your face looks. maybe try to shape them to make them a bit thinner if they’re messy/unshaped. not sure what exact shape would look best on you, but personally, thinner, straighter brows made a big difference to my face. of course thicker, natural brows look beautiful on some people, but if you’re looking to appear more feminine, neater looking brows are probably a good idea.

Try douyin makeup! I a have wide face with masculine features (intense eyebrows, very thin slit lips, harsh chin) and i find that douyin makeup is SO flattering. It strays away from the “snatched” look western makeup works to achieve and focuses on softening your features.

I read an article once about this. I tried searching for it and couldn’t find it. I remember thinner eyebrows helps and avoiding dark eyebrows, pink blush, some eyeshadow and brown eyeliner and any shade of pink lipstick. I can’t remember the rest.

Do you happen to grind your teeth? I do, and I got medical botox injected into my gigantic masseter muscles earlier this year and it helped so much with the grinding but it also narrowed my face a lot!

So it wasn’t actually that I had a wide bone structure or anything, it was just that my masseter muscles were huge from a lifetime of grinding my teeth, and it had added a LOT of bulk to my jawline

Honestly, a wolfcut/shullet, and just doing my best to accept that I cannot change the fact that I “look like a man.” It is hard, but try focusing on individual physical things you like about yourself, though I cannot stress enough that I don’t suggest getting attached to your hair. I’m only 35 and I’m in the throes of female pattern hair loss, right when I was starting to like what I look like. On top of that, shift your focus to things you like about who you are. Separate your worth from your appearance, as much as you can. Lastly, wear the outfit and makeup. Idc what anyone says to you, only weak, insecure and immature people give hurtful and unsolicited comments. If you feel confident and good, stick with it, even if it’s a struggle. I recently had some random stranger comment, “natural is beautiful, but my god you’re unattractive” on an Instagram post I made that was meant to try and remind women that what you see on social media isn’t real and uplift them, and I’m on day 2 of it absolutely leveling me. You got this, I promise, it’s okay to not be okay, and bad days are normal 🖤

Blush across your face instead of upwards in your cheekbones. I think overall Korean ish makeup techniques are very feminine

Little things outside of makeup soften the look as well. I work on farms and like to wear earrings to make the look more feminine. I have a few pretty but small hoops and short dangle earrings that are safe for outdoorsy work but noticeable.

Also, I’m not sure eyeliner on the water line is helping to make a less androgynous look. Might be because I’m around an area where men wear eyeliner often enough but I also know quite a few men who have such beautifully thick and dark eyelashes that they look like they tightline their eyes. Eyeliner imo is such a unisex makeup look.

Also curling eyelashes and using a really good mascara formula makes a huge difference. I was not a fan of curling my eyelashes until a few years ago and it makes a big difference.

This might sound crazy, but have you ever looked into drag makeup tutorials?

Although I’m guessing that full-blown drag makeup is a lot more intense than what you’re looking for, drag techniques can totally be toned down and adapted for low-key everyday wear. There are some fantastic techniques, and it’s all about emphasizing femininity!

With my very wide, flat, rectangle face, contouring is so helpful. It’s not something I do daily, but I’ll do it for makeup looks I post and for special events.

Personally, I never subscribed to softening or sharpening your face with just makeup to seem more masculine or feminine. You need overall styling changes and not just one thing to change the overall perception.

I’ve accepted that I naturally tend to have a more androgynous look myself and don’t really try to compensate for it much but I try to look more harmonious with it. So for you, I’d say lean into the smaller eyes, use dark eyeliner and contour but also play up other markers of femininity.

Try using hair extensions, try a nice lip shade, and wear feminine clothing (more so the prints and fabrics rather than any singular category of clothing). Try out a natural makeup look but with overall styling changes including hair and fashion.
