I️ have this issue where no matter how much makeup I️ put on, everyone always says it doesn’t look like I’m wearing any. I️ have applied multiple layers or gone as heavy handed as I️ can but my face always ends up looking flat. Here is my makeup routine:

  1. Rare Beauty primer
  2. NYX concealer under eyes, around mouth, above nose, and on my pimples. I️ blend this in with a tiny concealer brush
  3. Rare beauty cream bronzer in light brown on my jawline, cheek areas that are hallow, and forehead. I️ blend this in with a whispy contour brush
  4. Fenty beauty foundation on the areas of my face that I️ haven’t covered yet. I️ use a foundation brush and sponge to blend this in
  5. Go over contour area again with more contour and repeat step 3
  6. Rare beauty liquid blush under my eyes, blended with a blush brush
  7. Elf clear gel for eyebrows
  8. Some sparkly eyeshade applied to lid with a brush or my fingers
  9. Cream eyeliner stick if I’m feeling fancy
  10. Mascara and eyelash curler applied twice

I️ put elf setting spray on after every step!!

My friend suggested that everything I️ put on is too close in shade (my concealer, bronzer, and foundation) so it doesn’t look like I️ have any layers on. I️ put on light layers and keep going until I️ get coverage. I️ don’t put on setting powder because every time I️ have tried, I️ haven’t seen it do anything lol.

My skin is combination/dry.

Please help, I’m desperate

In my opinion that’s… a good thing? You’re mostly describing your base, which you want to look like skin! But if you’re wanting more dimension in the finished product, maybe play around with your blush application or try a different shade. You could also add a dab of highlight here and there.

My bet would be any comments about it “not looking like you’re wearing any makeup” are primarily about your eye makeup. If you’re happy with what you do now, stick with it! That’s what matters most. But if you wanted, experiment with more dramatic eye looks.

    Or add a bold lip!

I’m just now realizing that I️ have perfected my base….LOL

I️ lack in the lip area so thank you so much for bringing it up! I️m going to implement a bolder lip next time and see if it makes a difference

For complexion steps, having it look like skin is actually the goal. Ideally, it shouldn’t be immediately obvious that you have layers and layers of makeup on. It’s absolutely not a problem that people cannot tell you have concealer or foundation on, unless it’s actually sliding off the areas you want concealed. So unless your spots are visible through the makeup, you are probably applying it really well.

If you still feel that your face looks flat (as in 1 dimensional and undefined), then you might need a darker bronzer/contour. Or it might just be too matte. Matte finishes can make you look flat because light doesn’t bounce off the high points of your face the way it would with bare skin or something with a dewy finish.

Setting spray is usually used as a last step, not after every step but I don’t think there’s a hard and fast rule that you can’t either. I just think it might be overkill.

If you really want to look like you’re wearing makeup, just go dramatic with the eyes. You will look instantly made-up with a dark smokey eye. I wouldn’t change anything with the skin.

I think if you use powder products it will look more makeup-y

I noticed u only use liquid or creams which looks more skinlike

I would apply cream contour after foundation and top it with a matching powder, but that’s just my preference.

This isn’t a bad thing!! You can maybe try more bold blush or eye shadow for a more extravagant look!

if my face looks too flat, i try to saturate things. make my cheeks more saturated (apply more bronzer and blush), try to darken the dark areas of my eyeshadow more and lighten the light areas more. give things more contrast.

I have the same problem so I take a video of the look and rewatch it. If it looks too flat. I usually add blush, and inevitably add more eyeliner - because it’s the part of my face that is easy to make pop with the stroke of a line.

In your description, I see two major ways to add color or depth that include doing something big with your lips and extending the eye shadow beyond your crease.

I find that outlining my outer corner with a fun color and doing the inner lid with something light, and choosing an in between transition shade gives me more of that “hey, I’m wearing make up!” look I want. I also feel more made up with a swipe of highlighter or a more glowy foundation with no powder on top.

Most people look like they’re not wearing much makeup if they don’t wear eyeliner. Eyeliner and eyeshadow make all the difference!

If someone said that I look like I have no makeup, I would think they mean I am not wearing flattering or lipstick. Makeup isn’t complete until you have lipstick on, but that’s my opinion. I think it brightens the face in a good way.
