When you get a new pallet or single how many times do you give a shade a try before you feel like you know you like it or that you probably won’t use it again? I was kinda curious how many chances people usually give a shade.

Literally 1, but that’s likely because my patience is minimal and I have hooded lids, so I don’t wear eyeshadow much to begin with.

It depends why. If it’s clearly a poor quality palette, usually just one. If I’m not sure how I’m working the shades I’ll try a few combinations.

If it’s a quality issue, then just one. If it’s a colour issue, then maybe ~5 to see if I can find a combination that works

I don’t really feel like any shade is truly bad. It’s just outfit dependent

I guess I’m never going to wear neon but I know that and wouldn’t buy it

Like you can see the color before you buy it?

If we are talking about a single shade in the palette, not the whole palette, then my answer is 1. If I did not like it, I will be wasting time on a nasty shade, when I could use something I like instead. Makeup expires, eyeshadows may change over time, better to use what I love. But usually I forget that I did not like something, and a year or so later I may try these shades again.

If we are talking about a single eyeshadow - several times. I sometimes buy singles to try an eyeshadow formula of a different brand, and I want to form my opinion on it, to understand whether I should buy from them again or not.

Regarding a palette - it depends. But I would try to use it at least a few times before deciding whether I like it.

A few times, honestly, mostly out of desperation. I don’t buy palettes anymore because I want to like every color and feel open to using them all. If it’s a matter of formula, I can usually brute force a bad formula into working for me. How often I’ll bother?? Ehhh lol

That’s why I don’t like palettes very much, because there’s always some shade I don’t like.

I usually buy one only when there are maybe just two wrong colors. (I prefer pencils to eyeshadows)

I give any shadow at LEAST 2-3 tries before I’m done with it. I’ll try a different application style the next time, or a different placement the time after that, or a different makeup aesthetic where it might work better. I’ll usually give these chances a couple days or even a week apart so that I don’t get frustrated. But I will keep it on top of my vanity so it’s easy to reach for and play with until I’m sure how I feel about it.

Yes, this is literally what I would answer! Not giving them a few chances is just wasteful. Sometimes I want to use a shade/palette a certain way and it just doesn’t work out, but then I’ll come back to it later with a different idea and it’ll work! I think it’s important to experiment with any product before making a decision.

Depends on what the issue is. If it just doesn’t suit me, then I’ll just keep using it with other colours over time to try and find it’s purpose in my collection - I obviously liked the colour but it must be either a lid shade, outer corner shade, inner corner shade or a transition shade - really I just need to figure out what it’s best purpose is if its not fitting very well with the first job I assigned it. If it comes out as a colour I wasn’t expecting (as an example I had a yellow eyeshadow turn orange after I applied it the other day), then even though I’ll be slightly annoyed that it catfished me, I’ll try to figure out a better way to use it with different colors than what I’d originally envisioned. If the shadow performs badly, as in seems patchy, then I’ll try it with an alternative primer and without a primer and just try to determine if it is truly bad or something I can work with in another way. If it’s dusty and with little pigment then it gets one shot and I’m done. It’s rare the last one happens to me now though because if I get a dusty palette I’ll never buy from the brand again, let alone use the eyeshadow again.

I’ll open it and do my thing. If it doesn’t work, I’ll go make my coffee, and try again. If it doesn’t work on the 2nd try I peace out. It’s been a while since I had one that disappointed me. My main 3 predate Covid, if that says anything. (Smashbox, Estee lauder, Clinique)
