I’ve seen this is a common question over the years but wanted to get a fresh/modern (lol late 2023) take on it. Wondering specifically on everyone’s technique and holy grail products (the concealer and whatever you use to apply it or prep it)
Backstory is: I’m trying to get more serious about makeup (currently really bad at it tbh), and I’d really like to ‘perfect’ my concealer strategy! I mainly use it for eyes/undereyes. My problem is it always looks so ‘cakey’ on my skin. How can I fix this?

I’ve tried a variety of products, including lately from Kosas (liquid), Merit (cream), and Givenchy (liquid). I really liked them all, but I can’t help but notice applying any of them makes my skin look worse, texture-wise, and really amplifies the appearance of every fine detail around my eyes (dots on my skin, wrinkles, etc.). Even right after I exfoliated the night before, or use eye cream immediately before to prep the area.

Is this normal? Is there a way to fix this? I don’t notice this cakiness in other people who are excellent at makeup, so I feel like there must be some secrets out there on how to make it look good! TIA everyone

I have dry skin and an area of darkness around my eyes. Also a few deep wrinkles. I properly prep and hydrate my skin before any make-up. So after prepping, I tap in the orange LA Girl color corrector with my fingertips, then top it off my Born This Way Multi-Use concealer - tapping it in with my finger first then a make-up sponge. Then I dab my sponge in the tiniest bit of setting powder (Laura Mercier loose powder) and set around my eyes. For any product you apply: LESS IS MORE. Always prep with a good basic skin care routine and make sure your skin is hydrated by the time your ready for make-up. Also, try to make sure your skin care and make-up are all formulated with the same base to prevent separation. All my stuff is water based. Just last year I didn’t know the first thing about make-up. I watched a ton of tutorials on youtube and invested in some quality products and while I’m no pro, I’m proud to say that my make-up never looks cakey or settles into my wrinkles. My make-up lasts all day and looks great all day so those are my tips.

I use the tower 28 concealer which is nice and smooth, I put it on every sparingly with a small beauty blender that I wet with setting spray. No powder and it holds all day

Honestly you have to go through trial and error to find your way to a flawless application. There are people who refuse to use anything but their fingers and get a flawless application which I just can’t understand. Play around, try concealer with a primer one day, try it with a moisturizer the next and then try it without. Try with a beauty blender, try with a brush and then set with a loose powder or a pressed powder. Try different application techniques too.

Experiment. It’s the only way lol. If you do feel like you’re too cakey every time, try using a fluffy eyeshadow brush instead of a beauty blender/concealer brush to blend and spraying with fix+ after powder.

Less is more. Always. Learn how to use a minimal amount and tap in those problem areas. Don’t do all that baking and triangle shit the “influencers” do.

I put it on in a couple of spots and tap it into place. Then I find a finishing powder helps it crease less. Also I watched someone on YouTube apply it very specifically to just the dark areas (she was very careful not to apply it anywhere else because if you apply it to the light areas it emphasizes the dark areas).

I love using a setting spray to finish off my makeup routine after applying my concealer. It really helps keep everything in place throughout the day! :)

It could be the primer you’re using too, go to Sephora get samples see what works best for your skin or see your skin type and look up what others use but at the end of the day skin has TEXTURE totally normal and makeup can and probably will amplify it

I have just perfected this! Concealer by Rose inc - without a doubt the best I’ve ever used and I’ve used a lot. Coupled with (and this is imperative) their fluffy concealer brush. You could use a different one but it’s got to be fluffy. Dot on a tiny amount, then buff with the brush. It is FLAWLESS, even over my extremely textured areas. Smooths out like you wouldn’t believe. So much so that I have gone from using full coverage foundation to just this concealer by itself.

Moisturize your skin before hand, don’t use too much and accept that it isn’t going to look perfect. I don’t want to say concealer is a scam but I do feel like people have unrealistic expectations. It’s totally normal for young people who haven’t the slightest of wrinkles to still have lines and folds underneath their eyes and simply being a normal, happy person that smiles and emotes with their eyes and mouth is going to cause movement in the skin that can affect the look of the concealer.

Undereyes: plenty of moisturiser. Then a tiny dot of Tape Shape in the undereye hollow, blended out by patting with a finger. Allow to set, then apply foundation and blend over it, and set with powder.

TINY TINY dot - pinprick-sized. You really need very little indeed with a properly pigmented concealer. If it’s not enough coverage (unlikely - my dark circles look like big bruises!), wait until it’s set and apply another incredibly thin later.

cakey usually means wrong formula, under-prepped eye/skin, too much product or all of the above.

    1. if you have dry skin, avoid products that have a matte finish.
    2. prep the hell out of the under eye area. Use a bit of moisturizer, let absorb, then do it again and let fully absorb.
    3. use a hydrating primer; I use the now discontinued Smashbox hydrating under eye primer.
    4. use as little product as possible so if you have really dark circles, use a colour corrector first, followed by a full coverage concealer. My HG: either Lancome or Huda. I also really like the Becca corrector for super low makeup days.
    5. use liquid formulas instead of creams (ie. avoid the ones that come in a pot). My HG: Dior forever skin correct.
    6. use thin layers so don’t use the doe foot applicator directly onto your skin; that always deposits too much product. I apply a bit of concealer onto the back of my hand, use this brush to apply a bit my under eye area and blend. I keep adding a tiny bit at a time until I get the coverage I want.
    7. getting a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly is best to hide imperfections such as milia, super dark circles etc. Going 1 shade lighter will only highlight the areas you want covered.
    8. to set the under eye area, use a talc-free powder; I use Lys triple fix and get a tinted one; even a lighter powder can highlight the darkness.
    9. google Vincent Ford; he’s the MUA for Nars and has fantastic concealer tips.

I am a mature women so if this works on me, I’m sure it will work on everyone else. At the end of my skin care routine I use moisturizer all over my face as well as my eyes and than put a good amount of Bellif eye cream all around my eyes. I do my eye makeup before I do foundation and concealer so the eye cream has some time to penetrate my skin. For my concealer I first put on Winkey Lux concealer. It’s very light. Once I spread that around with my fingers I put on a swipe of Nars concealer and blend with a damp (almost dry) sponge. I then follow with a good amount of Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder and leave it on for a few minutes. Then I take a damp sponge (as above) and bounce it under my eyes to remove excess powder. I know this sounds like a lot but it really takes no time at all once you get the hang of it. My underlies never crease and at the end of the day they look as good as they did when I first put the products on. I used to use a corrector but found that for me, this works better and yes I have dark circles. Let me know if you try this combination.

i think the general rule of, less is more. Sometimes my concealer looked like absolute shit and i didn’t understand why, it was just coz i applied way too much and it looked cakey/ unnatural. Yesterday i made the same mistake but wiped some excess off with tissue and it looked much better and more natural. Also, actually tappinh on it rather than smearing it, which creates rlly weird streaks.

Alexandra Anele does content on under eye concealment. She has darker under eyes. Also, Robert Welsh does a tutorial on the subject as well. Less is more.

I have used them all and was a devoted Cle de Peau girl for years till I discovered Sisley concealer. A teeny bit goes a long way. I only use it under my eyes because that’s the only place I need it. My tip is to only apply it with a silicone pad and pat it in gently. It lasts all day and even into the night. I just pat it in with the silicone pad - without applying more - if I’m going out in the evening. The tube lasts forever (months and months) because so little is needed.

(Which is lucky because it is not cheap!)
