Hello! I have very oily skin and bad acne, for context. I take care of my acne as best I can, but it is unfortunately hormonal/genetic. Even on the good days, though, after a few hours, my foundation (Maybelline FitMe Matte, or Nars Sheer Glow, or Sunset Makeup) ends up pulling apart and kinda letting the oil seep through, if that makes sense. I use moisturizer and primer, so I’m thinking that might be the issue? Along with the oil, it’s too much for the foundation to hold? But idk! Any oily folks, please help!!!

I have oily skin and also had bad acne (now that I’m getting into my late 20’s it’s calming down!) I have the same thing with makeup “pulling apart” right by the creases of my mouth/nose area!!

Definitely moisturize! The neutrogena gel moisturizer (or TJ’s dupe) are great, cerave and vanicream break me out. So does salicyclic acid for some reason so I use the cerave gentle foaming cleanser! Niacinamide as an ingredient also really helped me to reduce oil production.

For concealers, you may want to look at makeup by mario (it can be drying on some people, and it dries down super fast so you gotta move quickly) or a hydrating concealer (ilia, kosas, tower28). Weirdly, kosas worked phenomenally on me. It’s so lightweight that it doesn’t break apart the same way some other concealers do on me.

For me there are two ways to make my makeup last: go hard or go sheer. Going hard for me is using niacinamide under my makeup, mattifying primer, matte makeup, matte setting spray, and then touching up with a pressed setting powder during the day. I use this for carnaval/long events where I need a full face. For everyday, going lighter with my makeup is actually what works best (ends up less cakey overall) - I use a skin tint and barely set it with loose powder. Thenn during the day, I buff out any cracks with a beauty blender and it kind of re-melts into my skin.

Also - the rare beauty liquid blush does not BUDGE on me and lasts all day despite the fact that sometimes I am just a greaseball.

Make sure when you wear primer with foundation that both products are silicone based or water based. Your products will separate if one is silicone and the other is water.

I’ve made similar mistakes by moisturizing with an oil based lotion and then going overtop with silicone. It slid off when I started sweating 😅

Don’t stop moisturizing if you have oily skin, but buy a moisturizer for oily skin and let the layers dry before applying the next one.

I found my primer was the issue. I was using MAC for years but recently switched over to Supergoop.

Supergoop is sooooo much lighter and dries almost instantly. Huge improvement for me.

However, im stealing the recommendation from this thread. I’m going to try setting powder after my primer and see how it goes. Keep us(me) updated OP

I had horrendous acne as a teenager and still get the odd break out and my skin tends to be oily. The first thing you need to do is change your moisturiser to one which is specially made for oily skin. I find gel formulas the best. I use moisture surge by Clinique but there are cheaper products which have a similar formula. Both Nivea and Simple are good. I would also skip the primer, even the ones that are supposed to help blur your pores. Then you need a light foundation and you already mentioned you use Maybelline products. I find their dream satin liquid foundation to have the best coverage without blocking your pores. Their concealer is excellent too. When I was younger I thought thick powder was what I needed but actually a light dusting of loose powder applied with a big fluffy brush works best. Finally you need some of those little blotting papers, Amazon sell 600 for £4.99. If you find your skin becoming greasy during the day instead of using more powder dab your face with one of these first. Hope you get sorted.

Check what your products are based on. For oily skin, surprisingly, oil/silicone based products hold best (though they induce acne). Water based products can crack and appear blotchy if the skin is oily enough. This is doubly so if you use products that are based on different consistencies. Say, if your foundation is water based, but your primer and moisturiser are oil/silicone based, it’s gonna look bad, and vice versa, and even if the primer and moisturiser are different bases.

Since you have oily skin, skip the moisturizer. This myth of always using moisturizer started years ago to sell more face cream. Skip the primer. Instead “prime” your face first by dusting your face with a thin layer of talc face powder. This will leave your skin with a matte and dry canvas before applying foundation. Apply the foundation next. I would also try Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. It is pricey but the only foundation that truly sets well on oily skin. I would then use only powder blushes and eyes shadows. Your skin is oily so you don’t want to add any more oils that will cause your foundation to break down.

I have oily skin (and live in a humid climate) and the products that have made my makeup budge proof are Innisfree No More Sebum Primer and Innisfree No More Sebum Mineral Powder. They are my holy grail products and I will buy them forever.
