Mid-30s, caucasian woman here. I wear subtle eye shadow, concealer around my eyes, foundation on my face, black mascara, and lip gloss.
Sure it’s simple, but when I’m in my bathroom mirror, by face looks very applied with makeup.
A few feet away in a full-body, mirror, though, it looks like I haven’t spent a minute applying it.
What gives?

Your routine sounds like a very minimal “no-makeup makeup look” so I’m not surprised it doesn’t show from a distance. Also bathroom lighting is usually bad for assessing makeup (often dim and fluorescent), unless it has a window to allow lots of natural light.

Yes you nailed the natural daily look! If you want a pop just adjust the color of your eye shade or lip. Start with one and figure out what feels best. Personally since I’m so fair with red hair. Mascara with subtle eye shadow and color on my lips works best.

This sounds like my natural daily look! It depends on your lip gloss colour too, if it’s quite subtle. I think if you want to make it more obvious, you can make it a more bold colour. You can also increase your eyeshadow colouring to shape the eyes or add a subtle eyeliner. Doing your brows can also help with shaping and framing the face. Some people will use bronzer/blush to bring out more colour in the face but depends on your skin tone/type. I personally don’t love adding face products for an everyday look cause it does too much for my face.

Have you had your eyes checked in the past few years? As we age, our eyesight changes over time, and you might be seeing a very slight blurring due to eyesight changes.

This seeks very subtle, I sometimes feel like I’ve put a lot on, but it’s neutral and blends with me, and people say that ’ I look great without makeup’… and I’m just thinking shit, I must look really ugly truly without it if this much effort equals no makeup for you.

It might be that it’s just so natural and well blended. If you want it to definitely show, maybe use a bit more and different colour scheme/harsher lines?

I have this problem because I have low lighting in my apartment. Even with my brightest bathroom light on, it doesn’t come close to natural light. So what looks like a good face of makeup indoors looks like absolutely nothing once I’m outside or somewhere with lots of natural light.

Ex stripper here, worked in a club with bad lighting. I feel you. I’d spend an hour+ in the girls room only to go out into the dark club and realize I look like an infant with mascara. 🤣

It’s likely 99% your bathroom lighting. Try applying in natural lighted area. Bathroom lights are usually a soft light, try switching to halogen bulbs which give off the closest to a natural light source.

This always happens to me in photos. I’ll look in the mirror and look nice, but then if a photo is taken of me I look like I just got out of the shower lol what gives

Sometimes it’s because you’re not wearing makeup with the right undertones for your colouring. I can wear any amount of warm brown eyeshadows and lipstick and they just look muddy and never make me look made up. But if I wear black, charcoal, grey and silver and generally cool toned eyeshadow, and raspberry toned lipstick, even if I just apply them lightly, they make me pop and look so made up and healthy and younger. Try 2 inexpensive small eyeshadow palettes in cool and warm tones and see what looks good. A great inexpensive way to experiment with different lipstick colours is to buy cheap lipliners in different colours and use them all over your lips to see what works for you colour wise. The lipliners can also be used as blush, just apply with your fingertips.

I think what you’re using is good enough, use very very small amounts but. For example for concealer around your eyes, maybe a small dot and a beauty blender to sheer it out would be your best bet.

Because it’s a basic makeup. But much depends also by skin quality: if it’s smooth without any imperfections, even concealer will be concealed.
