Came into the company outside hire as a Store Manager 6 months back (unaware at the time how bad the company is doing), chasing a career to hopefully District and Regional positions. Post store layoffs I’m now considering quitting the company due to potentially it going underwater. I get loyalty but that doesn’t get you anywhere in this day and age. Any opinions on whether staying or leaving to pursue promotions elsewhere?

I worked for them for 4 months. Lied to on my interview. “This will be the easiest job you’ve ever had.” “The staff is great!” Then SEVERELY underpaid for what was expected. When I asked my DM for help on my scheduling he said, “Creative solutions!” Unhelpful. And when we were getting a MASSIVE shipment in with an already packed stockroom I asked for help and he said, “Sell more shoes!”? No. Shit. Unhelpful again. To quote Bugs Bunny, “Don’t think it hasn’t been a little slice of Heaven. Cause it hasn’t.” Happy to be gone. You reap what you sow.

That’s exactly the same situation that reached my breaking point, I ended up leaving as well literally turning my notice in the day after I posted this. Although my DM was pretty solid in my opinion. I just also didn’t see a 5 or 10 year plan where I can progress within the company let alone, I was only earning $33.25/hour as a SM. You can make more than that in big box store middle management along with bigger bonuses.

Any company that makes a big deal about “family” is very likely the exact opposite especially if it’s corporate.

I saw a store manager work at vans for 14 years and never get promoted to DM. Hardest working most amazing boss I’ve ever had. Once I saw that I learned that store manager is the end of the road over there. I became a store manager eventually and realized like…yeah… you’re stuck there forever no matter how hard to go into it.

i made a post last year expressing all my frustrations of working for vans yhe past couple years (it was a bit of an incoherent rant tbh), as an assistant store manager and then casual employee, but seeing all these posts about mass layoffs doesnt surprise me

vans management is severely out of touch with the culture and demographics that make the brand what it is. i started in october 2021 as an ASM, and was specifically told i was hired because i was one of few people applying that actually skated, and that they wanted to connect with and support the local skate community, yet over the course of 2 years every effort i made to give my managers opportunities to be involved in comps, events and the skate community in general were dismissed or ignored

i love vans, but i honestly hope the brand sees hard enough times so that the idiots running it all into the ground are forced to reflect and hopefully rethink this whole greedy bullshit “maximise profits” approach

    or something

i sae this coming a long while ago, and it sucks, but i kinda feel relieved that i was right and not just seeing things through a jaded/idealistic perspective

I was an SM for three years. I had mentors that had been with the company for 13+ years. They never got DM or RM positions.
