I am morbidly obese. I have tried losing weight for over 20 years, and the doctors just say “eat less, excercise more”. I’m 43 that has occured to me, thanks. No matter how hard I work at it, I lose 20 lbs, and then start gaining it back even if nothing has changed. Or even if I reduce my calorie intake again. Or increase my exercise. Its too the point that whenever I look in the mirror I just see a ft cw of a person. I never really learned to do makeup when I was younger, and Idk how to really learn now. Ive been told by friends to just watch some YouTube videos & experiment. When I do, I just see a ft cw with make-up on. Somethings are okay look wise, somethings are, “Oh dear, that’s a no”, but nothing is ever, “hey, I like this”. How do I figure out something that works for me?

(And yes, I know I need therepy- working on it- just trying to work on things I can control right now.).

    Go book yourself a session with a professional MUA. Learn some techniques. Explain your self esteem is an issue and that you never learned the basics. They will teach you the basics. Before you go, know that it all starts with a good night and morning routine of cleansing and moisturizing and minimizing sun damage.

    Drink water, get lots of sleep and gently wash/moisturize your face every night. Then let them teach you techniques so that the YouTubers make sense.

    Makeup is one of the few things we can do to look better right now- that’s one reason I love it! Be gentle with yourself learning it, though. Get color matched for foundation and concealer. After that- you’ll know more about your undertones. Another trick is to keep the intensity low. Don’t go bold right away while you’re learning. Blending is your friend. I’m overweight myself and do a makeup channel linked in my bio. See if anything helps there. And let me know if you have specifics you want me to address. Enjoy it and be kind to yourself. ❤️

    I highly recommend the book “The Body is Not an Apology” by Sonya Renee Taylor. There is also now a journal that goes along with it. I’m seriously contemplating rereading it and using the journal this time.

    I used to never wear makeup because nothing looked “right” to me. Turns out the culprit was black eyeliner. Try a brown or grey eyeliner for a softer look!

      Piggy-backing on this— use an angled eyeliner brush and use any color eyeshadow as your eyeliner instead. Bonus: it’s super easy and forgiving to do a bit of a wing with eyeshadow as the liner!

      Brown mascara is underated too.

      With dark eyes but pale skin, I prefer the look of it for relaxed daytime makeup.

    It’s possible you have hypothyroidism. You should get it checked. There’s no point in punishing yourself if it’s a fixable medical issue

        Get rid of your full length mirror. Get that small makeup mirror instead. Trust me it will give you so much mental peace

    In the last ten years I went from being an athletic in shape person to being morbidly obese and now am back on my down again. I struggled to feel anything positive about t my appearance when I was at my heaviest so I hear where you’re coming from. I started to feel it was a waste of money to try and dress nice or get my hair cut and coloured or wear makeup etc because I was still ugly anyway. Well, actually that’s about the worst thing you can do in that state. I always looked at other big women who were just beautiful and confident and wished I could be one of them somehow. Then i started to notice, these women still wore fashionable clothes, they still spent money on themselves for hair and makeup and nails etc. it’s a form a self care! And when you care for yourself just a tiny bit, you start to allow yourself to say, well that does look good. I got a new power job at one point it was at my heaviest, I was over 300 lbs, but I went and spent like 500$ on a new wardrobe for work and I got my hair cut and coloured. I also got my eyebrows micro bladed. I honestly felt so great, and everyone around me was complimenting all the time. It’s a game changer for your self esteem to not neglect your appearance ! So what you’re not a supermodel, you can still try to look your best, right? And it was at that point I started to actually lose some weight successfully too.

    Lizzo is what one would call “morbidly obese” and her face is gorgeous and, to apporopriate from gay culture “beat for the gawdz”

    Maybe watch YouTube videos on how contouring and highlighting can give you a more angular look. I’d see if lizzos MUA has a YouTube channel. I think lizzo may have done her own makeup for a vogue YouTube feature.

    Just remember when you’re doing nails hair or makeup it can be fun make you feel good and you aren’t eating at that time so that’s already the right track if you are a bored binger (not sayin you are but it helps me to remember this). In this way self care things like this can prob help the weight journey and let you explore yourself in the process. I would check out no makeup makeups I love mauve brownish rosey matte lips layered onto a good chapstick and then a bit of blush and my eyelashes curled. Pencil in my brows or a pop of a light highlight and I feel glowy and good to go. If the makeup stands out to you or makes you feel anxious like it’s not complimenting your features do it a different way. I feel like the harsh contours( Kim k &Heroin chic) often look worse on fatter faces. But a nice lip color or a creamy looking eye look with hints of minimal pink or gold just make anyone look good. Plenty of bigger ladies rock makeup and you shouldn’t let anything about your body hold you back from your hobby. Also I feel like when things are super noticeable to us they aren’t to other people. I had a manager who was really obese and her makeup always looked flawless and excellent. No one ever thought she looked bad. People didn’t really mention her weight at all but we did talk about how nice she always dresses , her nails, jewelry hair and make-up. Most people aren’t looking at your weight so don’t let it stress you from expressing yourself

    This has helped me a lot. Cutting out sugar. No soda, no cookies, no candy. You will have a headache for about a week. Then you will notice you are not as hungry. You can go even farther and cut out white bread and white rice. Drink a lot of water especially that first week. I have daily headaches anyway. But now that I cut out sugar as much I can. The headaches aren’t as bad . I am not taking as much Tylenol as I used to. I still eat cake at special events. It is so hard to cut out sugar. Every day, you will fight with yourself. Like I want some mint chip ice cream from baskin robbins right now. I lost 10 since I went sugar free 2 weeks ago. Try it!!! But I warn you!!! It is very hard but worth it!!!

      We did keto months, and ai didn’t touch sugar during that time. I lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks, 13 lbs in 2 more months, and started climbing back up.

    Check out color palette stuff! There’s four “seasons” most people fall into: spring, summer, autumn and winter. There’s a billion videos on tiktok and youtube about this theory. Even if you can just narrow it down to which two you’re likely in, you can start making better color choices. I LOVE deep, dark vampy lipstick, but I look like a little girl playing dress up when I put it on. Once I got closer to figuring out my season, I was able to find a dark-ish lipstick that actually suits me. It can be a lot of fun and has nothing to do with skin or body type. I hope this helps. And starting with what you CAN control is a good way to introduce change in your life. Proud of you!

    My love, I am a massive fatty and have been my whole life. I’ve done every diet, lost (and gained) hundreds of pounds in weight. No matter how low the number on the scale, I never felt pretty or worthy or good enough.

    Makeup wasn’t the issue.

    When I accepted that I was going to be fat for the duration, my life changed. I decided I was going to do it fat- whatever ‘it’ was, I was going to make myself do it.

    My world is so much bigger and better now. Things aren’t perfect, but I very rarely think about my weight any more.

    Your worth as a human being is not defined by the number on the scale or the size label in your clothes. You are precious and valuable exactly as you are.

    Going to pop in here with my own story. I hope you don’t mind. I’ll try and keep it short.

    I’m 38 years old and was morbidly obese my entire life. On and off diets since I was 8 years old. Around 2015, I started watching makeup tutorials online. I practiced and practiced and practiced. It became a hobby of mine. I still don’t know what kind of undertones I have so I tend to just play with things until I like them on me. For the record - I’m no professional. I still can’t do liner or apply lashes, so I just don’t bother. I took *a lot* of pictures of my makeup, so I could refer back to what I liked and what I didn’t. On top of makeup - I started ingesting body positive content. I started following all the beautiful plus size influencers that rocked what they had, wore what they want, and had fun with their makeup.

    In 2019 I started intermittent fasting. I thought it was just going to be another bullshit diet I force myself to be on, but - almost five years later I’m down 75 pounds and have easily maintained my loss. It turns out that I love it and I love how I feel doing it.

    Here’s the thing though - doesn’t matter how much weight I lost. I *still* work to appreciate and find myself beautiful every single day. When I look in the mirror, I see the lazy eye I was born with. I see my Italian mustache poking through. I see my big arms, loose skin apron belly, and jiggly thighs. And don’t get me started on my pendulum breasts. On my worst days - these are the things I see, but… on my good days, I see my bicep muscles I work hard for. I notice my breath when I’m hiking with friends and how easy it feels to climb. I can feel my calf, hamstring, and quad muscles. I notice my gorgeous hazel eyes and my big smile I often get complimented on.

    Good luck, my friend. It’s not easy. It’s hard. It doesn’t matter what size we are.

    if you reduce your calorie intake long term to a level that is lesser than you burn in a day you cannot possibly gain or even not lose weight. however you do not need to let your ability to wear makeup hang up on your weight. you are not a fat cow, you are just a person. you have features like anyone that certain makeup will look good on and others won’t. perhaps watch youtubers with features (and that may include their weight) similar to yours and see what you like and don’t on them, then replicate that for yourself.

      But no matter what I try make-up wise I dont feel like it looks good on me. I just see my fat self with make up on, and it never looks good. I can get to passable, but it never looks good.
